AIGA stimulates thinking about design within the creative community by focusing on innovative practices, celebrating excellence, and raising critical issues for discussion among professionals. As an AIGA member, you’ll be part of a national organization that raises the profile of design among the media, the business community, and the public by illuminating the challenges of the design process, the role of the designer and the value of effective design. AIGA, founded in 1914, is the oldest and largest membership association for professionals engaged in the discipline, practice, and culture of visual communication, graphic design, and now the emerging field of experience design. AIGA is open to the exciting and rapid changes occurring in design, yet is definitive in its promotion of the highest professional standards working within the design disciplines. This combination of openness and authority is what attracts the largest student membership of any design organization in the world since, for many of the next generation’s designers, AIGA members and activities personify their personal aspirations. AIGA has been transformed from a once-exclusive club to the hub of an active and inquisitive network of professionals. Members of the AIGA include professional designers, educators, and students engaged in all of the disciplines of design. AIGA respects the legacy of traditional design disciplines even as it has become the center of the more conceptual, multidimensional, and strategic practice of design today. On a local level, you’ll be able to take part in determining the direction and significance of design in your community.
