Summer Networking in Austin
posted on June 27, 2011
Triple digit temperatures are here. Kids are out of school and summer vacation plans have been made. No doubt about it, for many things slow down a bit during the summer in Austin. That doesn't mean it has to for you. Here are some ideas to make the most of your summer networking efforts.
Since a lot of folks will be in and out of town as they try to escape the heat and enjoy some vacation time you'll need to work just a bit harder. Your follow-up will need to be that much stronger, and it will likely take an extra touch or two to schedule meetings. That's perfectly ok. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate your professionalism and polite persistence always pays off. Also be sure to ask the question. When you get somebody on the phone, or you have a live conversation at an event, inquire about their vacation plans and in town availability. You'll save yourself a lot of frustration knowing when they'll be gone.
Be creative with how/when you're setting up meetings. This doesn't just apply to the summer either. The more memorable an experience you can create when meeting people the better. Suggest a meeting for Iced Coffees at your favorite local Austin coffee shop. Cold beers and margaritas become even more desirable. Heck, consider hosting a pool party or bbq to get family and friends involved. Helping people escape the hot weather in a fun way is always appreciated. Tubing anyone?
Have some fun of your own. Don't forget to take some time out to enjoy yourself as well. Networking should be fun and you'll always have better experiences and get better results when you're in the right frame of mind. Keep yourself in that right frame of mind by taking your own vacation or at least appreciating some of the great activities Austin has to offer over the summer (Check out: 365 things to do in Austin)
