Networking on a Budget

posted on June 29, 2010

I'm often asked about how to network effectively on a limited budget. Plenty of new entrepreneurs and those between jobs or careers have to work a little harder to conserve their cash. Fortunately it's relatively easy to pinch pennies and still build strong relationships in the community.

First realize that networking isn't just about events
. By my definition real networking happens person to person. That type of relationship building is easily done over an inexpensive cup of coffee or tea. Even at Starbucks a regular cup of coffee doesn't cost that much. You'll just have to stay away from the 13 shot venti soy hazelnut vanilla cinnamon white mocha with extra white mocha and caramel. Better yet networking makes a great excuse to get to know some of the great local cofee shops that Austin has to offer.

Try before you buy
. There are literally hundreds of local Austin organizations to choose from. Before spending hundreds of dollars in membership fees make sure that the group is the right fit for you. In most cases it really doesn't make sense to be part of an organization if you're not going to get involved on some type of a regular basis. So attend an event or two, and even pay the extra non-member fees to make sure the group is a good fit for you and your needs.

The best things in life are free
. Phone calls and e-mail messages are a cheap and easy way to keep relationships alive. Don't forget that they exist. You can also use LinkedIn and Facebook to deepen your relationships and keep up with old friends as well. These are all great tools to augment your face to face efforts, so use them. The price is right.

Don't let money be your excuse not to network
. There are always free and inexpensive ways to meet people and develop trust. Warning, Shameless self promotion: Heck! A NetworkInAustin.com membership is only $10 a month or less and our NetStorming events just $15 for members. That's a pretty darned good deal if I do say so myself. :)

Happy Networking!
