My Favorite Tools Part 2 (Dropbox)

posted on May 9, 2011

Welcome to part 2 of my short break from networking tips where I'm sharing some of my favorite tools with you.

If you're like me and you work on multiple computers (think home, work and sometimes more). Then you probably find yourself in a somewhat constant state of moving files back and forth. Sometimes you e-mail things to yourself, other times you use a thumbdrive, and you're constantly wondering if you're working on the latest version of a particular file... That is until you start using Dropbox.

Dropbox is a simple tool that has a lot of additional benefit, and once again it's free!

In my world Dropbox has basically replaced "My Documents" on my systems. ALL of my documents go into this new folder. It's really as easy and simple as that. Now for all of the super cool benefits:

  1. Everything in my dropbox is backed-up basically in real-time online.

  2. Since I have dropbox on multiple systems it sychronizes all of those files across all of my systems. Meaning I save a new document on one computer, and it's almost instantly available on the others.

  3. I can share certain files or folders within my dropbox account with other people!

The back-up benefit of this solution alone is particularly valuable, especially if you don't have anything else in place. The bigger benefit for me, thanks to a combination of these tools, is that if my laptop exploded right now I could literally be back up and running on any a new (or borrowed) system in a matter of minutes as long as I have an Internet connection.

If you work on a team, board or other group that needs access to the same files then you're going to love this.

Dropbox is definetely worth checking out!

Disclaimer: If you setup a dropbox account using these links I will get an extra 250MB of storage space. That is nice for me, but not at all the reason I'm sharing this particular tool with you.

Happy Networking!
