I recently spoke to the Austin Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD). With just one minute left in the Q&A somebody wisely asked how one can make 1:1 meetings more effective. Sometimes I worry that these networking tips are too basic or simplistic. Yet so much of good networking is about getting lots of little things right, and many of the little things are really just common sense. Appearance Matters

Several people have suggested this topic to me over time, and I'm past due in sharing my thoughts on it.Austin is a pretty laid back city. That and it's summer and it's HOT! So is it ok to dress things down a couple of levels?I'm actually going to attack this question of appearance from a much higher level as I'm probably not the person you want to take specific fashion advice from (especially if you're of the female variety). Focus on the Success of Others

The most successful networkers adopt a mindset that is all about the person sitting across the table from them. Most people I know, myself included, think about and consider themselves first. So it's a bit unnatural to try and think of another persons needs first. Ironically the more you're able to adopt this kind of mindset the better your own results and successes become. Read more »
