Networking Gold

Most folks feel that the prize we are panning for in the networking stream is the business referral. The referral could be for a job, a sale, a strategic contact, or another strong networker. We are all hoping to tap into a sales vein. Products and services are the prize for this referral type.
The key thing to bear in mind, however, is that referrals can also contain other types of wealth besides business success. Referrals may be for a new doctor, a new golf course or a good book. They might be for a trustworthy mechanic or a lawn care tip. Referrals may help you see a good movie or make your next vacation more special. Be careful not to focus so single-mindedly on the business gold that you miss all the other treasures to be had in networking.
Networking is about connecting. When you are connected with someone, the gifts you can share together are endless. Friendship, advice, wisdom and direction are just a few of the riches to be had while prospecting for referrals. Remember to accept all forms of networking gold.
