Management Vs Leadership they are not even close

In the not to recent past, I used to travel and teach management and leadership skills across the USA and abroad. The interesting piece that came up as I was teaching this more and more was the content within our textbook material was not really about management of people. Very rarely, are the good managers and good leaders combined. They tend to be good at one area but not as good with the other.

So what does it take? First of all, a person needs to really understand management is more about tangible tasks and leadership is more about one's skills with people.  Leadership is much tougher because it requires the leader to be disengaged from emotional decisions yet really care about the people that work with them. Notice I said work "with them" not "for them".  Keep in mind adults are supposed to work for themselves, a great leader eliminates the barriers and obstacles that prevent people from being successful.  That being said, you can't eliminate an individuals deep routed mental barriers, sorry not possible. A deep routed mental barrier is for the individual to take care of, therefore it takes the burden off your shoulders feeling like you have to be someone's parent in your organization.

So be engaged , always be curious and don't show people how much you know until you show them by your actions how much you really do care.
