Help Me, Help You

Part of being a strong networker is being prepared to ask for something.  I’m not talking about asking for a sale.  I’m talking about being ready to answer the question “what can I do for you?”  Most folks want to help each other.  It’s a very natural thing.  We want to help others find their way to success.  So when someone asks you for your request, what are you going to ask for?

Here are some suggestions.

Another meeting.  It’s always a good idea to have another meeting on the books.  There is not a short cut to spending time together.  A second meeting can be very powerful.

A specific type of referral.  If you ask for something that is open ended, like “I’m looking for business.” your counterpart may find that irritating and hard to focus on.  Be specific.  “I’m looking for owners of print shops.” Or “I would like to meet someone from XYZ company.”  This helps your fellow networker zero in on a good fit for you.

A good networking event  Ask for referrals on good networking events in the area.  Ask why this person likes this group and if there is anyone in particular to meet there.

Your blog.  Ask your one-on-one partner to read one of your blog posts.  Ask them to let you know what they thought about it.  Hopefully, they will take a minute and look over your blog and possibly even sign up for it.

A book referral.  Ask for the very best book they have read recently.

Allowing others the opportunity to help you is a great way to give back to your networking community.
