Get to the Front of the Line and Back to Work
posted on April 25, 2010
Long-term unemployment is at a record high. According to an article by CNNMoney.com, over 44% of the unemployed have been out of work for over six months.
We know how unemployment works. The real question is, what does every successful job seeker have in common?
It's not that they have the best resume or the best interview skills. They aren't the most passionate person with the most drive or best value proposition. They aren't the most qualified person or the least expensive person. It's not that they dress right or that they arrive early. They aren't necessarily even the most articulate person.
The ONLY thing every successful job seeker has in common is that they are at the front of the line.
So, is there anything more important than getting to the front of line?
The system is set up to put you at the end of the line. Getting to the front of the line does require a new approach.
How can you increase the odds of getting to the front of the line?
Be easy to find. Take advantage of technology. Learn new skills to help you move up in the line. Be in more control by understanding how hiring works. Do the research to learn about companies, their needs, their hiring process, their culture.
All of the traditional steps are still important. It can make all the difference to have your good resume be a great resume. It can help you stay in the front of the line. You do need to make a good first impression and interview well.
And then realize what Charles Darwin said in the 1800s is more true than ever; “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.”
Our work environment has changed. And the change is permanent. Now is the time to be creative. The tools and skills you learn now will make a difference for the rest of your career.
