Entrepreneur Lesson #1 - Enjoy the Ride

posted on June 16, 2010

My experience in the world of entrepreneurship spans over 12 years. I started my first company in our home in VA. The first customer I got made me extatic! I was the only employee so I handled sales calls, tech support calls, and billing calls. It was a roller coaster ride mostly because I didn't know what I was doing!

I sold my first company about 8 months ago and am now on my second company. I am determined to 'enjoy the ride' this time as apposed to working my tail off to try and get as many customers as fast as possible. If I get 2 customers a week (my customers are on recurring monthly/quarterly billing which helps) I am happy. I want to get to know each customer and help them and if I am handling 5 customers a day like I was with my first company, I just don't have the time to do that!

So, my suggestion to any new entrepreneur is to 'enjoy the ride'. Making money is great, but it won't take the place of being excited to wake up every morning and help people. That's more life changing than just raking in a pile of cash.
