Dealing WithTwo Powerful & Competing Goals

posted on April 27, 2011

We all have many goals in our lives.  Some are small, some are big.  Some take a day to achieve, some months and even years.  Some pull us with powerful conviction, others fall into the bucket of “we have to or should”.  But what do we do when we have two or more very powerful (and potentially conflicting) goals in our lives?  For example, and this is common, we need to make an income to support our families but we also have a burning desire to serve some bigger cause.

During our quarterly workshop yesterday, we looked at just that dilemma.  How do we deal with it?

Let’s remember, we can always do both.  The key is to be clear on what each of the goals means to us and how much of our energy we can afford to spend on each so we serve them as best as we can.  We need to make some progress toward each goal every day or week, even if it’s small progress.  We shouldn’t put any powerful desire away for a rainy day.  It all counts and drives us to where we want to be.  In the case of needing to make an income, that’s a mandatory requirement.  If we aren’t making money performing our “passion” yet, we will get there and eventually find a way… let’s set our intent and conviction out front, where we can see them.   Put time aside time every week to work on a goal that moves us towards the aspiration that drives us.  Some of us find that time easily, others have to put it on our calendars.

Clarity and awareness of competing goals is always the key.  Let’s not fall into the “when I retire I will follow my dreams” or “when I’m ready” mentality. The day to start is now!!!
