Customer Service Exemplified

posted on November 18, 2009

I attended the Austin Chamber's Building Blocks of Business event yesterday, which happened to be about customer service. Steve Zbranek of Zbranek Custom Homes gave examples of fantastic customer service and lousy customer service. While all that was happening, I got to experience phenomenal customer service in action and I thought it worth mentioning. It SO makes a difference!

I had been invited to the event by Nick Gammelgard who works at the Chamber. I eat a plant-based diet so I had inquired in advance about what would be served, since I often can't eat at events and just need to know ahead of time so I can arrange my own meal. Not only did he get back to me immediately with the information, he asked me what I usually ate for lunch (salad) and assured me a salad would be waiting for me there.

There was a miscommunication, as it turns out, and no salad was there. Nick wrote down what ingredients I would like in my salad and then - get this - he ran out to the restaurant across the street and bought it for me! Wow.

I learned a lot from the speakers about customer service, but I learned a lot more from Nick's actions. I will not forget what he did and it will serve as an example to me for myself and others. Thanks, Nick!
